Pastor's Update

The Mission Field
is our neighborhood!

In the 1950s and before, it was the civic duty of people to join a church.  It was what you did - whether to raise children in the "acceptable" way, to make business contacts, or to find friends and companionship.  People often attended the church nearest to their home.  In addition, the church was seen as moral, upright, and just.

Then, starting in the late 1960s, our world and culture began to shift.  People became more mobile with jet airplanes and interstate highways.  Television changed the way we understood ourselves and the world.  The "church" as a religious institution lost some of its power and relevance.  Through well-publicized scandals, foibles, and politicking, the Christian church has indeed proven that it cannot always live up to the message it proclaims.  In the words of author and speaker Phyllis Tickle, the church has become "encrusted" with the trappings of power and institution.

We have since seen many different religions from all over the world gaining followers and exposure here in the United States.  No longer is membership in a church an unspoken requirement for a businessperson.  No longer does a majority of Americans attend church worship on Sunday mornings.  Our world, country, and city have changed.  Yet most people, when surveyed, say they consider themselves "spiritual."

Our mission at Trinity is to shake off the deposits and build-up and reach out to our neighborhood of Nob Hill once again.  May we truly embody the forgiving love of Jesus Christ, and may we touch our neighbors with love, compassion, and the good news that God loves each one of us.  Our neighborhood is now more than ever our mission field.
